What is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ)?

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is a martial art and combat sport that focuses on grappling, particularly ground fighting and submission holds. It emphasizes technique and leverage over strength, making it effective for people of all sizes and strengths. BJJ practitioners use joint locks and chokeholds to control or submit opponents.

Do I need any prior experience in martial arts to start BJJ?

No! Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is suitable for beginners, and you don’t need any prior martial arts experience. Many people start BJJ with no background in martial arts at all. Our instructors are trained to teach students of all levels, from beginners to advanced practitioners.

What do I need to get started?

All you need is comfortable athletic wear, such as a rash guard and shorts, for no-gi classes. If you're participating in gi classes, you'll need a BJJ gi (uniform). We offer gi rentals and can help you purchase your first gi. You may also want to bring a water bottle and a towel.

What is a gi vs. no-gi BJJ?

  • Gi: The traditional kimono-style uniform worn in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Training in the gi involves grips on the fabric, which can change the techniques used.
  • No-Gi: Training without the gi, typically wearing rash guards and shorts. No-gi BJJ uses more body control and is often faster-paced due to the lack of grips.

What’s the difference between a white belt, blue belt, purple belt, etc.?

In Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, the belt system is used to track a student’s progress and experience. The common progression is:

  • White Belt: Beginner
  • Blue Belt: Intermediate
  • Purple Belt: Advanced
  • Brown Belt: Very advanced
  • Black Belt: Expert level

It can take several years to progress through each belt level, and promotions are based on skill, knowledge, and time spent training.

How often should I train?

It depends on your goals, but to make consistent progress, we recommend training at least 2-3 times per week. BJJ is a martial art that requires time on the mat to develop muscle memory, technique, and conditioning.

Can I train BJJ if I’m out of shape or have no athletic background?

Absolutely! BJJ is for people of all fitness levels. The techniques are designed to allow smaller, less athletic individuals to defend themselves against larger opponents. Our classes focus on improving technique, fitness, and conditioning, and our instructors will guide you at your own pace.

What age can I start training BJJ?

BJJ is suitable for all ages, starting as young as 4 or 5 years old.

Do you offer private lessons?

Yes! We offer private lessons for those who want one-on-one instruction. Private lessons can be a great way to accelerate your progress, focus on specific areas of technique, or receive personalized feedback from an instructor.

What’s the etiquette in a BJJ class?

BJJ has a strong culture of respect, discipline, and camaraderie. Some basic etiquette includes:

  • Always show respect to your instructors and training partners.
  • Be on time for class.
  • Keep your gi clean and free of dirt.
  • Tap out if you’re caught in a submission.
  • Avoid using excessive strength; BJJ is about technique, not power.
  • Practice good hygiene, including trimming nails and showering before class.
  • No shoes on mats

Can BJJ help with self-defense?

Yes! BJJ is an incredibly effective self-defense martial art, particularly in situations where you end up on the ground. The techniques taught in BJJ focus on controlling and subduing an opponent, using leverage and submissions. It’s particularly effective for defending against larger or stronger opponents.

I’m not sure if BJJ is for me. Can I try a class first?

Yes! We offer a free trial class or introductory class for new students. It’s a great way to get a feel for the sport, meet the instructors, and see if it’s the right fit for you.
